Elevate Giving with Clarity

Being clear on what the Bible says and what your church believes is key. Video Message attached.

We have noticed that many people come from many different backgrounds in our church. Some come with preconceived notions on giving, tithing, and generosity. We have also become aware that many people come from churches that they have been turned off with all of the giving campaigns and fundraisers. There are more people like this than you might imagine. So, how do we allow them to see the principles of the Word and how it is intended to work in their lives, without offending them further? This is challenging.

We have decided to position ourselves in such a way that people that attend on Sundays are going to be made aware of how generous our church is. A couple of times per month, we show a video of the things that we've sponsored on their behalf (out of the generosity that they've exhibited). We call it "Because of You." This is a quick spot in the news/announcements videos that we play prior to the message on Sundays. This helps them see the generosity of their church prior to our giving/tithing moment at the end of service. We've noticed that this softens their outlook on sowing into our ministry. This is about changing a community, not just about keeping the lights on at the church or the next building project. People seem to really like this.

We also do not shy away from the principles of the scriptures that show us to tithe and give generously. We try to position this as something that is not a law but a principle in the Word of God that helps us stay aligned with God. Of course you know, but we state frequently, that our treasure is connected to our heart, and the real thing that God wants is our heart. Every year, we have a series that is based around generosity and stewardship. This usually lands toward the end of the year. However, we also added a message annually on tithing sometime around the middle of the year. This seems to help the congregation understand tithing better and how God speaks about it in the Bible. This past year we did a message called "Over and Above", and it was very informative about how the tithe prior to the law, in the law, and past the law into the New Testament. I have never heard so many people talking about and thanking us for teaching this message on the tithe, as they were previously confused about it. I wanted to show you this message, because we used an example with fruit on the stage to help the people understand. It may be something that you want to use in the future. I got the idea from a friend of mine, Pastor Rob Ketterling, from River Valley Church in MN. I hope that it helps you in elevating the understanding of your congregation on the principle of the tithe. That message is attached to this post. I have also attached my message notes, if you're interested.
